Comprehensive Dental Exams
A comprehensive exam is more detailed than a routine dental checkup. It includes a thorough examination of each tooth and its surrounding structures such as bone and gum health. Any previous dental work that might need to be repaired or retreated, such as fractured or chipped fillings, crowns/bridges needing replacements
- Gum health – color and the firmness of the flesh around the teeth. Gum recession or bleeding gums are indicators of compromised dental health and can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. Early treatment can save the patient from problems both in terms of health and money
- Checking for bite problems and jaw pain – A traumatic bite can be a source of pain in the teeth, jaws, or gums. Discomfort with biting down could be due to toothache or TMJ problems. Diagnosing the source of pain will allow for the correct treatment options.
Should I get a comprehensive dental exam?
A comprehensive exam is generally recommended every 3 to 5 years to detect any potential health issues from the very beginning before they can get serious. If you have had any major health issues recently, it is a good idea to schedule a comprehensive exam.
What does a comprehensive exam include?
Examining your teeth, gums, and the surrounding bone, bite evaluation as well as digital X-Rays, intraoral photos, oral cancer screening for your mouth, jaw, and neck
